Welcome to the Junior Primary level The junior primary classes cater for children from about 6½ or 7 years old to 9 or 9½ (equivalent to grades 1 – 3 in mainstream schools).
The environment is prepared with a wide range of materials and resources, allowing the children to build on and develop the skills laid down in the preschool and to apply and extend their information and understanding of the world.
This is a passage from the concrete world of the preschool environment – where everything is in a physical form – to the abstract world of ideas and concepts, calculation in numbers and written descriptions. The children are encouraged to seek information in all directions and it is a time of delight in discovery, experimentation and spontaneous creativity.
In this phase the children are gregarious and sociable, liking to work with friends and engage in group activities. They move freely about the classroom, as they did in the preschool, and the class director facilitates and guides on a one-to-one basis or in group presentations.
The week’s programme includes small group activities such as music and art, sport, isiXhosa and Afrikaans conversation.
Extra activities vary from time to time and include sport, chess, art and craft, and yoga. Piano, recorder and guitar lessons are also offered.
The day begins at 8.00am and runs until 2.00pm from Monday to Thursday and until 12.30pm on Fridays.
